Because of the popularity of online dating and the ability to remain annonymous it is obvious the scammers of this world choose dating sites to carry out scams. Unfortunatley as in life there are many people waiting to take advantage of the lonely and vunerable. However there are a few things you can do to avoid being the next scam victim.

The most obvious thing is never to send money to someone you don't know! If someone told you they could contact someone online with a photograph of a pretty woman or handsome man and get that person to send them money you would probably say 'NO Way'! But it happens all the time. The professional scammers know how to get money out of the unsuspectiing. They know what the lonely want to hear. There are many men and women out there who have been sucked in by a scammer telling them what they want to hear.

Even if you have been corresponding with a person for a long time it does not mean the person is genuine. Many professional scammers work on people for months on end. They will start of being overly complimentary about you. This will then move on to how much they love you and need you etc, etc. Eventually you will be asked for money. They will have a medical emergency with a relative, a business disaster which needs financial assistance or any general need for money due to unforseen circumstances. A lot of the foreign brides sites have women asking for travel and visa expenses to meet men. Of course the women never turn up and there are many men who have lost 1000's to these types of scams.

The majority of small time scammers work on the free dating sites. This is because they don't have to pay for any services and can remain annonymous. All they need to join a free dating site is an email address and a picture of a good looking person! That's all. There are plenty of women scamming men by using photo's of models to hook men! And it's been known for men to pretend to be women and scam men! With free sites you just don't know who you are corresponding with. Some of the biggest premium free dating sites offer no background checks or verification of it's members. Naturally these sites are full of scammers. Gay men are now being targetted by straight Russian men posing to be gay and scamming them in the same way as the Russian women scam men on the foreign brides sites. As long as there are people willing to send money to people they don't know, then there will always be scammers.

Our advice is simply not to part with any money to anyone. A decent, honest, genuine person is not going to ask for money.
